Green Construction in 2020

Green Construction in 2020

Only a handful of companies qualify to be designated as a Certified Green Professional™. Being a Certified Green Professional means, you are a builder, remodeler or another type of industry professional who incorporates green building principles — without driving up the cost of construction. KR Wolfe, Inc. is a proud Certified Green Professional and is ready to take on any green building project to make a better tomorrow.

In 2020, efforts to better the environment and create greener outlooks will continue to bring in new construction projects. These new projects are incorporating green technology and abide by green construction laws. Green construction requires using processes while creating structures that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient. Green construction is in effect throughout the entire lifecycle of the project from design, to operation and maintenance, renovation, as well as construction and deconstruction.

There are four main components and elements when it comes to green construction:

  1. First are your materials for the project. All materials are obtained from natural, renewable sources that have been managed and harvested in a sustainable way; or they are obtained locally to reduce the embedded energy costs of transportation, or salvaged from reclaimed materials at nearby sites.
  2. Second, are the energy systems used in the green building. Items such as solar panels or energy-efficient lights are installed in the building, as well as designing buildings to allow for more natural light to reduce the use of energy.
  3. The third is water management and the inclusion of water-saving. Companies can minimize water usage by installing greywater and rainwater catchment systems that recycle water for irrigation. Implementing point-of-use hot water systems also helps to save on water heating.
  4. Last but not least, green construction has to consider the health components such as using non-toxic materials and products that will improve indoor air quality. Indoor air quality is also addressed through ventilation systems and materials that allow the building to “breathe” properly and control humidity.
