Time to Renovate Your OR for the Coming Wave of Elective Surgeries?

Hospital Operating Rooms nationwide have been crippled by the novel Coronavirus pandemic. Numerous facilities and ambulatory surgery centers had to convert surgical suites into ICU style rooms to prepare for the expected deluge of critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Elective surgeries, which are vital revenue drivers for healthcare systems, were canceled or postponed for months. But today medical equipment manufacturers are seeing signs that Operating Rooms will soon be bustling again.

During the company’s earnings conference call on May 21, Medtronic’s Chief Executive Officer Geoff Martha said the company is getting texts and calls from hospitals, health system CEOs and purchasing agents who anticipate a faster than expected recovery for surgical facilities in many parts of the country. According to Martha, the message was “basically saying, are you guys ready?  Buckle up.”

It’s logical that medical equipment makers, like Medtronic, Stryker and others would be among the first to learn that hospital ORs are preparing to handle a growing volume of procedures since these manufacturers provide such a broad range of OR equipment and medical supplies.

A May 2020 article in Bloomberg News pointed to another reason that surgery volumes should start picking up in a big way. Many surgical procedures, while labeled elective, are actually critical for the long-term health of the patient, so after a prolonged delay, doctors may feel the need to move quickly to begin scheduling and performing back-logged procedures.
